The Battle Map
We split the game into ten battles. In each one, 100 points are shared between the two players: 50–50 is dead even, 55–45 is a clear edge. Bigger battles count more when the totals are added up.
Weight: core battles count 3, material 2, supporting 1. Weights were fixed before any scoring.
The receipts
The numbers that decided it, from the locked evidence ledger. Read through, then build your own comparison in the Career Lab below.
Kemp could really score
| Kemp TS%, 1996 playoffs (20 games) | .640 |
| Kemp in the 1996 Finals vs 72-win Bulls | 23.3 pts · 10.0 reb |
| Mourning TS%, 1997 playoffs | .529 |
| Mourning TS%, 2000 playoffs | .542 |
TS% (true shooting) = how many points a player gets per shot, counting threes and free throws. Higher is better.
Edge: KempZo owned the paint
| Mourning block rate, 1998–99 | 7.7% |
| Mourning block rate, 1999–00 | 7.8% |
| Kemp's best prime block rate | 4.6% |
| Mourning after his kidney transplant, 2005–06 | 10.2% |
Block rate = the share of opponents' two-point shots a player blocks while on the floor.
Edge: MourningKemp's leaks
| Kemp turnover rate, 1995–96 | 20.4% |
| Turnovers per game, 1996 playoffs | 4.0 |
| Fouls per game, 1996 playoffs | 4.2 |
| 1996 Finals Game 1 | 32 pts, fouled out |
Turnover rate = turnovers per 100 plays he finished. This is why Kemp's scoring edge stays small.
Counts against KempSame value, fewer games
| Career games: Kemp / Mourning | 1,051 / 838 |
| Career Win Shares: Kemp / Mourning | 89.5 / 89.7 |
| Career BPM: Kemp / Mourning | 0.6 / 2.2 |
Win Shares estimate how many wins a player added. Zo matched Kemp's total in 213 fewer games. BPM rates impact per 100 possessions against an average player.
Edge: MourningKemp moved the ball better
| Kemp assist rate, 1993–94 | 12.4% |
| Kemp assist rate, 1997 playoffs | 14.5% |
| Mourning's prime assist rate (often under 9%) | under 12% |
Assist rate = the share of teammates' baskets he set up while on the floor. Useful, not game-changing: neither was a playmaker.
Edge: KempThe Reign Man on the glass
| Kemp rebound rate, 1995–96 | 20.3% |
| Mourning's best prime rebound rate, 1998–99 | 17.5% |
| Kemp offensive boards per game, 1996 playoffs | 3.3 |
Rebound rate = the share of all available rebounds he grabbed while on the floor.
Edge: KempTwo great defences, one anchor
| Seattle defence: 1993–94 / 1995–96 / 1996–97 | 101.5 / 102.1 / 102.7 |
| Miami defence: 1996–97 / 1998–99 / 1999–00 | 100.6 / 98.9 / 101.0 |
Defensive rating = points allowed per 100 possessions. Lower is better. Payton and Karl's pressure built Seattle's; Zo sat at the centre of Miami's.

Box-score and rate stats only. The Lab Result weighs a lot more than these (defence, playoffs, role, context), so picking a window here doesn't change the Lab Result. Totals: Basketball-Reference. Block and rebound rate: StatMuse, regular season only. Window rates are minutes-weighted.
Career highs
The biggest night each of them ever had, stat by stat. These are one-off games, so they show the ceiling, not the usual.

| Blocks | 726 May 1993 @ Suns | 922 Apr 2000 vs Pistons |
"Hit 3 times" means they reached that number in more than one game; the date shown is the first. Checked against Land of Basketball, StatMuse and RealGM.
The stress test
Before calling it, we check whether the answer holds from four other angles. These don't add points.
What we can't know
- Modern player tracking doesn't exist for either prime, so how many shots Zo scared off is not recorded.
- Seattle's and Miami's great defences were built by coaches and teammates too. We only credit what we can pin on the player.
